2nd Grade - We were able to finish the Surprise in the Middle drawing that was the weekly warm up activity. For the rest of the time, students celebrated their final Enrichment class for this year.

3rd Grade - These students learned that Threatened means to give an ominous indication of doom. They also learned Abraham Lincoln was voted captain of his militia troop but the group disband when no orders came for them. He then immediately joined the Independent Spy Battalion as a private. The warm up activity for today was a Surprise in the Middle drawing. For the Evaluative Thinking lesson, students played three different game boards and had to evaluate them. The final activity was a quick assessment to see what the students had learned this year about relationships.

5th Grade - The activities for today started with learning a new vocabulary word: Kibitzer means an onlooker who offers advice. George Crum, the investigator, was a cook at a fancy lodge who invented potato chips when he got angry with a picky customer. Students completed the Surprise in the Middle drawing for the warm up activity. After lunch, students spent time trying to solve a Rubik's cube.

2nd Grade - This week's affective lesson focused on the understanding that no one is perfect. After watching a book called No, David, students discussed mistakes they made then wrote a letter of apology to someone they had wronged.

4th Grade - This class learned that Lapse means a temporary pause or interruption. They also had Abraham Lincoln for their investigator. An interesting fact about Mr. Lincoln was that he didn't have a beard until he ran for President. A little girl wrote and told him he would look much better with a beard plus women would convince their husbands to vote for him if he grew one. For the warm up activity, students followed directions to create a Surprise in the Middle drawing. Students completed a quick assessment about what they learned regarding Systems while in Enrichment this year. Students then left to enjoy the fifth grade science fair.

Thank You!

I would like to send a huge THANK YOU to the Washington Irving PTO, parents, and students for all of the kinds words, notes, treats, and gifts bestowed upon me last week during Teacher Appreciation week. Your kindness was more than generous and I greatly appreciate the way you all demonstrated support for our teachers and staff.

2nd Grade - The learning for today began with the word Personality which means the visible aspect of one's character as it impresses others. Rose Greenhow became a spy for the South during the Civil War. One time she raised $2,000 in gold. When her ship ran aground, she tried to save the gold, but couldn't swim and the gold took her to the bottom of the sea. This class started the Surprise in the Middle drawing for the warm up activity. They will finish it tomorrow.

The final activity was to improve the bridges they built last week to see if they would hold a thesaurus.

3rd Grade - This class learned that Extinction means a coming to an end or dying out. Their investigator, John F. Kennedy, tried to compete against his older brother and failed. But Mr. Kennedy succeeded when it was necessary. Students worked as a group to complete the Quotation Quizzler for the warm up activity. In Crystal Pond Woods students continued to develop their evaluative thinking skills. This week they developed criteria and used a problem solving matrix to decide what to do for 30 minutes in class. They chose to build rafts that would hold weight and float for one minute.

5th Grade - The vocabulary word was Trenchant which means incisive, forceful. Andre Garnerin, the investigator, came up with the idea of the parachute to escape from prison. The affective lesson provided students with an opportunity to reflect on what they have learned in this segment all year. After a quick assessment on structures, the students set par for their segment of the golf course. Then everyone was able to play the entire course. The course will be on display in our media center.
