Our explorer today hated music, but after hearing a violin he became the famous composer George Gershwin. Students brainstormed a spontaneous problem from Odyssey of the Mind for the warm up activity. What is a Gift? was the focus of the affective lesson. Our weekly trip to Crystal Pond Woods had students demonstrating their divergent thinking skills as they had to build a tower from three sheets of construction paper and approximately 36 inches of tape that would hold the most encyclopedias. One structure held 17 encyclopedias. Dr. Rains tested their watercraft from last week to see if they would float over the lunch period. Every craft stayed afloat.
5th Grade - Today students learned that Ligature means bonds used to tie or bind. The explorers today traded a candy cough formula for a meal. James Smith mixed up a batch of the cough candy which was an immediate success and named the new invention Smith Brothers Cough Drops. Students brainstormed an Odyssey of the Mind spontaneous problem solving problem for the warm up activity. The affective lesson focused on rules students used to follow and which ones they will have to keep in the future. The rest of the morning was spent researching and writing essays for the Exploravision contest.

3rd Grade - These students began their morning by learning that Depression means a period of time in which there is little economic activity and many people do not have jobs. Their explorer was Harrison Ford who has a small fleet of airplanes he uses to help rescue people. Students worked together to solve a quotation for the warm up activity. In Crystal Pond Woods, students learned that inventions can be fun elaborate contraptions similar to what Rube Goldberg used to design. Each student was given the opportunity to design their own elaborate contraption to help Isabel the Inventor crack acorns. We concluded our book study of Abel's Island by doing an experiment to understand why Abel did not start a fire in his log home. Teams then worked together to design a craft that would float with the materials they were given.
5th Grade - Today students learned that Sedulous means industrious. Samuel Colt as a child liked to tinker especially with firearms. As a young adult he wondered if he could invent a gun that would load more than once with a cylinder kind of like a ship's wheel. The focus of the affective lesson was on choices we have to make. We learned how to observe items primarily through sight. Finally, students researched more information fore the Exploravision project.
2nd Grade - This class also concluded the book study of Abel's Island watching the candle under the jar experiment. They also got to draw a survival bus.

3rd Grade - Conclude which means to stop or finish: to come to an end: to end in a particular way or with a particular action - was today's vocabulary word. The explorer was Tom Cruise who was a struggling reader as a child but has become a very talented actor. Students completed a Surprise in the Middle drawing for the warm up activity. We have covered all five of the characteristics of successful people. Today we looked at famous people and how they met each of the criteria of a successful person. The final activity was to create our own logic elimination puzzles or complete other logic puzzles we had started in the past.
5th Grade - Today's learning started with Diaphanous, the vocabulary word, which means translucent, transparent. The explorer was Tom Adams an inventor. Tom's friend, Santa Anna, suggested he try inventing with chicle from Mexico. When that failed, he tried chewing it and invented chewing gum. A Surprise in the Middle drawing was today's warm up activity. The focus of the affective lesson was to have the students identify what was important to themselves. We reviewed the results of the insulated cup project then discussed ways to improve upon their designs. The final activity was to discover different items we have as a result of cultural borrowing.
2nd Grade - This class was given some items and a tsk to accomplish. They were unable to solve the problem. They did learn that when they solve a problem, they have to take time to create a good plan before they try to solve the problem.

3rd Grade - Primitive was the vocabulary word for this week and it means of, belonging to, or seeming to come from an early time in the very ancient past. Jim Carrey was the explorer. Mr. Carrey was an "A" student until his father lost his job and Jim had to go to work. The affective lesson focused on courage. Students were to give a one minute speech on a random topic. Having each student give a speech and celebrate each success took quite a bit of time this morning. The remaining time was spent working on logic elimination puzzles.
5th Grade - This week's word was Solicitous which means attentive, concerned. The explorer was Luther Burbank who had more than 3,000 experiments going at the same time. One of his experiments was to develop a potato that could withstand blight which led to the development of the Idaho potato. Students solved Plexer puzzles for the warm up activity. Plexers are common words or phrases put into picture form that the students have to solve. Self discipline was the focus of the affective lesson. They had an opportunity to demonstrate self-discipline while Dr. Rains took care of a quick errand. The final activity for the Marco Polo study was to create a newspaper headline. Students then researched more about insulation and developed a plan for their problem which we will build next week.
Special activities kept the second graders busy at the end of the day.

Students solved several Plexer puzzles for the warm up activity. Over the next several weeks, the fourth graders will be looking at issues successful people deal with on a daily basis and how they can impact students. Before we start the lessons, students took a pre-assessment to determine where they are with each issue. They also created a house plan to help them visualize the impact of each area. In the case of Marco Polo, students have left their positions as jurors and today became newspaper editors. They had to design a headline regarding the outcome of the case. The final activity was to spend time researching windmills then planning a new and improved design.
2nd Grade - The weekly trip to Crystal Pond Woods had students completing logic elimination puzzles with manipulatives.

3rd Grade - Prioritize was the vocabulary word for today which means to list or rate (as projects or goals) in order of priority. Our explorer today was Lucille Ball who had been told by a drama teacher that she had no talent. The affective lesson focused on task commitment and the various types of motivators. In Crystal Pond Woods, students were given several logic elimination puzzles to solve. The final activity was to hear about the book Abel's Island. We learned a little bit about hurricanes because that is how Abel ended up on a deserted island.
5th Grade - The vocabulary word for the day was Pejorative which means disparaging or negative comments. Levi Strauss was the investigator for today. He had moved to California during the gold rush to sell material. When he couldn't sell his canvas, he sewed it up into some pants inventing blue jeans. The warm up activity was a brainstorming session from Odyssey of the Mind. Students were to create a rhyme of an animal. The affective lesson focused on dependability. Students heard closing arguments from fellow jurors today in the case of Marco Polo vs. the City/State of Venice. Finally, students spent some time researching insulators.
2nd Grade - Students wrote stories about themselves called "Fingerprints of Greatness.)

4th Grade - First, the vocabulary word was Benign which means something that is harmless. Their explorer was Mary McLeod Bethune who started a school for black children following the Civil War. The warm up activity was a brainstorming activity from Odyssey of the Mind. For the affective lesson students finished their Gifted Trait Family Tree. The objective of this lesson was to help students understand that their giftedness comes from their heritage just as other traits they have comes from their ancestors. Marco Polo had his final day in court as students listened to their fellow jurors present their side of the case in deciding if he is guilty or not guilty of fraud.
Dr. Rains had a funeral to attend in the afternoon unfortunately having to cancel the 2nd Grade class.

Therefore George Washington was the first President under the Constitution. We started working on the warm up activity but our time was just too short to finish the problem.
4th Grade - Today's learning began by having students write down the word of the week which was Confound. Confound means to confuse or mix someone up. After a group photo, students learned about a famous person who overcame a struggle to become successful. Today's focus was on Bill Cosby who overcame poverty to become a famous comedian. The warm up activity was a Stories with Holes problem. Together each class came up with a Code of Conduct (class rules). The social/emotional segment focused on different personalities. Each student took the True Colors personality inventory. Our theme for this year is #InvestigateCreateElevate (#ICE). The lessons will center on Explorations. Students took a pre-assessment to determine their current understanding of the topic.
2nd Grade - These students will meet with me thirty minutes Monday - Wednesday and Friday. Look for a post each day regarding their activities. 2nd Grade - We were able to finish the Surprise in the Middle drawing that was the weekly warm up activity. For the rest of the time, students celebrated their final Enrichment class for this year.
3rd Grade - These students learned that Threatened means to give an ominous indication of doom. They also learned Abraham Lincoln was voted captain of his militia troop but the group disband when no orders came for them. He then immediately joined the Independent Spy Battalion as a private. The warm up activity for today was a Surprise in the Middle drawing. For the Evaluative Thinking lesson, students played three different game boards and had to evaluate them. The final activity was a quick assessment to see what the students had learned this year about relationships.
5th Grade - The activities for today started with learning a new vocabulary word: Kibitzer means an onlooker who offers advice. George Crum, the investigator, was a cook at a fancy lodge who invented potato chips when he got angry with a picky customer. Students completed the Surprise in the Middle drawing for the warm up activity. After lunch, students spent time trying to solve a Rubik's cube.

2nd Grade - This week's affective lesson focused on the understanding that no one is perfect. After watching a book called No, David, students discussed mistakes they made then wrote a letter of apology to someone they had wronged.
4th Grade - This class learned that Lapse means a temporary pause or interruption. They also had Abraham Lincoln for their investigator. An interesting fact about Mr. Lincoln was that he didn't have a beard until he ran for President. A little girl wrote and told him he would look much better with a beard plus women would convince their husbands to vote for him if he grew one. For the warm up activity, students followed directions to create a Surprise in the Middle drawing. Students completed a quick assessment about what they learned regarding Systems while in Enrichment this year. Students then left to enjoy the fifth grade science fair.

2nd Grade - The learning for today began with the word Personality which means the visible aspect of one's character as it impresses others. Rose Greenhow became a spy for the South during the Civil War. One time she raised $2,000 in gold. When her ship ran aground, she tried to save the gold, but couldn't swim and the gold took her to the bottom of the sea. This class started the Surprise in the Middle drawing for the warm up activity. They will finish it tomorrow.

3rd Grade - This class learned that Extinction means a coming to an end or dying out. Their investigator, John F. Kennedy, tried to compete against his older brother and failed. But Mr. Kennedy succeeded when it was necessary. Students worked as a group to complete the Quotation Quizzler for the warm up activity. In Crystal Pond Woods students continued to develop their evaluative thinking skills. This week they developed criteria and used a problem solving matrix to decide what to do for 30 minutes in class. They chose to build rafts that would hold weight and float for one minute.
5th Grade - The vocabulary word was Trenchant which means incisive, forceful. Andre Garnerin, the investigator, came up with the idea of the parachute to escape from prison. The affective lesson provided students with an opportunity to reflect on what they have learned in this segment all year. After a quick assessment on structures, the students set par for their segment of the golf course. Then everyone was able to play the entire course. The course will be on display in our media center.
