4th Grade - Learning today began with the vocabulary word Instill which means to put a feeling or idea into someone's mind slowly. The explorer, Thomas Jefferson was inspired by his teachers to learn as much as he could about everything. For the warm up activity, students were to create a cantilever structure that would reach out as far as possible from a point on the table. The affective lesson focused on task commitment. Students had to create a certain design from Styrofoam and toothpicks in five minutes. The rest of class was spent learning about formations and creatures that are around hydro-thermal vents deep in the ocean.

2nd Grade - Today's lesson focused on affective thinking in particular how to deal with anger. After listening to the story Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Voirst students wrote a friendly letter with suggestions to make a day go better.

5th Grade - Today's learning began with the vocabulary word Spurious which means false, counterfeit. The explorer today was Elijah McCoy the inventor of "The Real McCoy" which was a way to lubricate parts of a train while the train was moving. For the warm up activity, students were to create a cantilever structure that would reach out as far as possible from a point on the table. The affective lesson focused on helping students develop a list of things that were important to them which would help determine their personal belief system. The rest of class time was spent finishing research on an item that related to hydro thermal vents and then creating a Prezi presentation.

2nd Grade - Today we learned that an Artifact is a simple object (such as a tool or weapon) that was made by people in the past. Elizabeth Van Lew (Crazy Bet), today's explorer was actually a Union spy ring leader during the civil war. This group also created a cantilever structure for the warm up activity.

3rd Grade - These students learned that Prehistoric means of, relating to, or existing in the time before people could write. Our explorer, Alexander Graham Bell is most remembered for inventing the telephone, but he also invented the comic book. Students worked together to solve a quotation quizzler for the warm up activity. The affective lesson focused on the generalization that there are many types of gifts. In Crystal Pond Woods, students finished the visual analogies they started last week. The discovery lesson explored the word Serendipity which is a discovery by accident. We had a few minutes left in class to get a preview of glaciers - our next discovery.

5th Grade - Students from the Monday class joined us today. We began our learning with the vocabulary word Sojourn which means a short sty, brief residence. The explorer was Guglielmo Marconi who studied physics so much that he failed his college entrance exams. He continued to learn on his own and invented the radio. Our affective lesson focused on making promises to ourselves now so that when we are faced with a "sticky" situation we will be prepared. After a quick review of continental drift and plate tectonics, our lessons moved to the ocean floor where we started research projects around the Mid Atlantic continental ridge.

2nd Grade - We completed our reader's theater about dinosaurs then started researching dinosaur hunters.

1st Grade - These students learned that the deaths of Presidents James Garfield and William McKinley were hastened by their doctors. Students worked together and solved a quotation quizzler puzzle for the warm up activity. In Crystal Pond Woods we began learning about inventor thinking where there are lots of answers. Today we started putting together our "brainfocals" to help us with brainstorming.

5th Grade - Students from the Monday class joined us today. We began our learning with the vocabulary word Sojourn which means a short sty, brief residence. The explorer was Guglielmo Marconi who studied physics so much that he failed his college entrance exams. He continued to learn on his own and invented the radio. Our affective lesson focused on making promises to ourselves now so that when we are faced with a "sticky" situation we will be prepared. After a quick review of continental drift and plate tectonics, our lessons moved to the ocean floor where we started research projects around the Mid Atlantic continental ridge.

4th Grade - These students learned that Plausible is something that seems reasonably true but may not be. Our explorer for the day was Langston Hughes who was part of the Harlem Renaissance movement during the Great Depression. We worked together to solve a Quotation Quizzler or dropquote.com for the warm up activity. The affective lesson focused on the generalization that successful people demonstrate creativity. Students were given a sack of materials and had to make an animal them write a story about the animal. After reviewing the movement of the earth's crust from last week, our exploration lessons will take us to be ocean floor next week.

2nd Grade - This class learned that a Ceremony is a formal act or event that is a part of a social or religious occasion. The explorer was William Henry Harrison who was cursed by Tecumseh for destroying a Native American village to get the property for the United States. For the warm up activity students worked together to solve a quotation quizzler puzzle.

3rd Grade - Today's learning began with the vocabulary word Paleontology which is the science that deals with the fossils of animals and plants that lived very long ago especially in the time of dinosaurs. Oprah Winfrey did not wow her bosses at the TV station where she was a reporter. When they moved Oprah to a daytime talk show she demonstrated what she could do. In Crystal Pond Woods, students manipulated Pentominoes into certain shapes. Students were then presented with visual analogies.

2nd Grade - After reading about Mary Anning, the fossil hunter, students completed some math problems about dinosaurs.

1st Grade - We spent our time together today finishing up the logic elimination puzzle we started last week and the Venn diagram from last week.

5th Grade - Today students learned that a Chaparral is a thicket of shrubs and small trees. The explorer, Horace Wells discovered laughing gas could be used as a pain killer accidentally discovering anesthesia. For the warm up activity, students were shown 8 close up pictures of creepy crawlers and had to identify the creatures. The affective lesson focused on using good manners and reflecting on things that students do well. The exploration lesson branched off from the tectonic plates lesson of last week. This week we explored the life around under sea steam vents.

4th Grade - The Tuesday afternoon class was moved to today so students could enjoy their Valentine parties tomorrow. The vocabulary word for this week was Candid which means someone who is honest and sincere. The final lesson was understanding that explorations of new frontiers may impact advancements in other fields of study. Alfred Wegener wanted to be a climatologist and meteorologist. He noticed how all the continents appeared to look like pieces of a puzzle thus developing the theory of continental drift which students learned about working with pudding and graham crackers.

2nd Grade - In Crystal Pond Woods, students had the opportunity to use their visual thinking as they tried to make a train of dominoes that had figures instead of dots on them.

Milton Hershey, today's explorer was a failure in the candy business until he found a recipe for making caramels. That led to the launch of Hershey chocolates. These students had to identify the eight close up creatures that crawl under or along the ground for the warm up activity. Their affective lesson focused on setting goals. The final lesson was understanding that explorations of new frontiers may impact advancements in other fields of study. Alfred Wegener wanted to be a climatologist and meteorologist. He noticed how all the continents appeared to look like pieces of a puzzle thus developing the theory of continental drift which students learned about working with pudding and graham crackers.

The afternoon classes remained in their regular classrooms to enjoy Valentine's parties.

Their explorer was Belle Boyd who became a master pickpocket while acting as a southern spy. These students worked together to solve the 9 mystery creatures of today's warm up activity. Their affective lesson reviewed the problems of stress and ways to relieve stress.

3rd Grade - These students learned that Paleontology is the science that deals with the fossils of animals and plants that lived very long ago especially in the time of dinosaurs. Their explorer was Oprah Winfrey who did not wow her bosses as a TV reporter. They moved her to a morning talk show and the rest is history. The focus of the affective lesson was preserving our gifts . Students had to create a structure from tape and straws that would protect an egg when dropped.

1st Grade - These students learned that Calamity Jane should have been called "Lucky" instead of Calamity as she helped people wherever she went. In Crystal Pond Woods, students used Venn Diagrams to help them search for clues that would lead to the one right answer.

5th Grade - Today this group celebrated National Eat Ice Cream for breakfast with their teacher as it was also her birthday. We worked together to solve the Quizzles/logic elimination puzzle for the warm up activity. Understanding that being gifted means different things to different people was the focus of the affective lesson. Each student had an opportunity to write about the things that they do well. The rest of our class time was spent building the creatures from the other school according to the directions they sent us.

2nd Grade - The affective lesson focused around the book Stress Can Really Get On Your Nerves.

5th Grade - Today this group celebrated National Eat Ice Cream for breakfast with their teacher as it was also her birthday. Their vocabulary word for today was Inception which means start or beginning. The explorers were Richard (Dick) Knerr and Arthur (Spuds) Melvin who invented the hula hoop and saved hundreds of jobs. The warm up activity was a Quizzles/logic elimination puzzle.Our exploration lesson focused on the generalization that the explorations of new frontiers may impact advancements in other fields of study. This led to a science experience regarding the earth's tectonic plates.

2nd Grade - These students learned that a Mineral is a substance such as quartz, coal, petroleum, salt, etc. that is naturally formed under the ground. Their explorer was Martin Van Buren who presented his first case as a lawyer at the age of 15. Students worked together to solve the Quizzles/logic elimination grid puzzle for the warm up activity.

3rd Grade - These students learned that Erosion means the gradual destruction of something by natural forces (such as water, wind, or ice). Steven Spielberg daydreamed in school which caused him to be rejected from film making school. Students worked together to solve the Stories with Holes problem for the warm up activity. In Crystal Pond Woods, students had the oportunity to solve a visual problem as they attempted to color a map using only four different colors. The discovery lesson focused on the Gold Rush. Students then had an opportunity to simulate what digging for gold was like as they dug for chips in chocolate chip cookies.

5th Grade - This class learned the word Machinate means to plot or scheme. The explorer, Robert Goddard could not convince the United States military to use his rockets during World War II. Mr. Goddard is known as the "Father of Modern Rocketry." Students were challenged by the Stories with Holes warm up activity problem and were able to solve the mystery. The focus of today's affective lesson was on writing your own code of conduct to follow. The rest of the afternoon was spent completing the Exploravision project.

2nd Grade - Students took time to complete projects that had been started earlier in the week.

1st Grade - These students learned that our 19th President, Rutherford B. Hayes did not win the election by the popular vote but by the Electoral College. They worked together to solve the Stories with Holes problem for the warm up activity. In Crystal Pond Woods they continued their detective thinking as they played a game using attribute blocks.

5th Grade - These students learned the word Machinate means to plot or scheme. The explorer, Robert Goddard could not convince the United States military to use his rockets during World War II. Mr. Goddard is known as the "Father of Modern Rocketry." Students were challenged by the Stories with Holes warm up activity problem and were able to solve the mystery. The focus of today's affective lesson was on writing your own code of conduct to follow. The rest of the morning was spent completing the Exploravision project.

4th Grade - The students in this class learned that  someone who is Unflappable has a lot of self-control and is not easily upset or frightened. Today's explorer, Martha Graham was a famous dancer whom President Ford call a "national treasure." Students solved the Stories with Holes problem for the warm up activity. The affective lesson focused on the generalization that being gifted means different things to different people. . The rest of class time was spent finishing up the directions for our robots, finishing up the planet brochures, and repairing our mystery creatures.

2nd Grade - During their weekly trip to Crystal Pond Woods, visual thinking was combined with storytelling to create nursery rhymes. Students had to solve the puzzles by identifying the name of the nursery rhyme represented by the shapes.
