5th Grade - This week's word was Solicitous which means attentive, concerned. The explorer was Luther Burbank who had more than 3,000 experiments going at the same time. One of his experiments was to develop a potato that could withstand blight which led to the development of the Idaho potato. Students solved Plexer puzzles for the warm up activity. Plexers are common words or phrases put into picture form that the students have to solve. Self discipline was the focus of the affective lesson. They had an opportunity to demonstrate self-discipline while Dr. Rains took care of a quick errand. The final activity for the Marco Polo study was to create a newspaper headline. Students then researched more about insulation and developed a plan for their problem which we will build next week.
2nd Grade - They learned that Civilized means marked by well-organized laws and rules about how people behave with each other. Today's explorer, Sylvia Earle, spent more than 6,000 hours under the sea. The warm up activity for this week had students solving several Plexer puzzles.
