5th Grade - Today we learned that Spurious means false, counterfeit, The successful person was Elijah McCoy. Mr. McCoy was the son of fugitive slaves who managed to send him to Scotland for an engineering degree. The only job he could get was with the railroad. He invented a way to grease train parts while the train was moving. Folks called it "The Real McCoy." Students worked together to solve the Plexer puzzles for the warm up activity. The focus of the affective lesson was on communication as a leader. Sometimes someone may have the information but may not communicate it properly to the group. The final activity was to begin building a robot to solve one of the LEGO space missions simulating Space Exploration.
2nd Grade - These students learned that a fossil was an item preserved from a past geologic age. Their successful persons were John Tyler and James Knox Polk the tenth and eleventh Presidents. Students worked together to solve the Plexer word puzzles for the warm up activity. Qualities of friends was the focus of the affective lesson and how they can help relieve stress. In Crystal Pond Woods, students continued developing their visual reasoning as they identified and named figural attributes. The Discoveries lesson focused on fossils and the understanding that discoveries may impact the behavior of people and influence history.
